Plan of a Tuna Trawler
Launched in the Vendée, this new type of boat, called Chalutier Thonier, succeeded our traditional vessels. It appeared in Concarneau in 1932 and in Etel in 1938.
You have in front of you a plate illustrating the layout of this new ship, 21m long and 6.15m wide. For a gross tonnage of 57 tons.
You can see that it is still equipped with a reduced daggerboard (by almost half), maintained as an auxiliary in the event of a breakdown and which supports the vessel during trawl manoeuvres.
The net shop and the chain well are located forward. The forward berth with bunks allows the crew to rest. Then the ice store and the fish hold insulated with agglomerated cork for a volume of 47m3. In the centre the sulzer diesel engine, 4 cylinders, 4 times of 160 C.V. at 500 turns, the propeller turning at 250 turns. The latter allowed a normal speed of 9 knots, for 3 to 4 knots in trawling.
Aft is the crew quarters with four berths. On the deck we have from front to back: the hatch to the shop, the hatch to the forward station, the hatch to the fish hold, the winch (removed when fishing for tuna), the helmsman's cabin, the galley communicating with the aft cabin.
A small lifeboat ensures the safety of the ship.
